Metformin is contraindicated in patients with a history of thromboembolic or cardiovascular disease, especially in the setting of heart bypass surgery. Metformin has not been evaluated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. As with other drugs, metformin may cause gastrointestinal side effects in patients with gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding disorders. Because metformin is contraindicated in patients with a history of peptic ulcers, these adverse effects are likely to occur.
